The UIL Experience
A basic summary
The University Interscholastic League (UIL) is a series of different scholastic events that span a variety of
school subjects. Each event covers a certain topic and expands upon what a student would learn in the classroom.
Students are pushed to learn more about these topics and enhance their knowledge. These competitions serve the
purpose of providing students with the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities.
Events
UIL has a wide variety of events to choose from, spanning a wide variety of subjects. There are two main kinds
of events, these being writing and speaking. A majority of writing events are test based events that test your
knowledge on a particular subject in a certain way. There are also journalism events that require you to write
a story of some kind. Speech and debate events require you to talk about certain topics and debate them with
others. All of these events together make up what UIL is.
On Competition Day
On the day of any competition, schools will be given a room to report to during their brief stay. This could be
the cefeteria, gym, or even a classroom. This is where students will wait for their events to begin. During
invitational meets, some event times may overlap (-_-). A schedule will usually be provided before the actual competition
date. If you are competing in multiple events, you may have to run across campus if they are far apart (-_-).
Your main goal for any meet should be to just do your best and have fun!
General Tips
- Check around your school first to see what teams they have and try them out.
- Get plenty of rest and practice for each meet as you will need it.
- Don't worry if your first invitational doesn't go well. The point of invitationals is to practice for
district. - Be sure to try your best during pre-district as that's when coaches will see who to take for district.
- Join UIL! Be a part of it, it's fun and looks good on your resume. Doing extracurricular activities like
UIL helps when applying for college, jobs, and scholarships.
